The Francesco S. and Jole C. Bellelli First Generation Scholarship Endowment supports first-generation students enrolled in the Steven J. Green School of International & Public Affairs (Green Shool). The Bellelli Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of Francesco and Jole Bellelli, and their commitment to ensuring access to education to those most in need.
Ambassador Francesco Saverio Bellelli was born in Capaccio, Italy. After earning his law degree with honors at the University of Naples, he began a foreign service career that took him around the world, including the former Yugoslavia, France, Greece, and Switzerland, until his last post as Ambassador of Italy to Burma – now Myanmar – where an unknown tropical disease took his life prematurely in 1978.
Jole C. Bellelli, his wife, had a doctor of philosophy degree and a passion for literature. She left teaching to follow her husband’s career abroad. She recalled the importance of education, saying, “Whatever you may choose, your education will always stay with you.”
The scholarships will be awarded to first-generation students enrolled in the Green School. Preference will be given to students wishing to study abroad in Italy. However, if no study abroad candidates apply, preference will be given to Green School students with an interest in history, politics, economics, culture, memory and reconciliation, or other such areas of study.
