european-union-flag-400x257FIU has received a grant from the European Commission to establish a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence.

Supported by a three-year, 100,000-euro grant by the Education, Audiovisual and Culture Executive Agency, FIU, through its Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs, will be a focal point of competence and knowledge on issues and subjects related to the European Union. FIU has one of 33 centers around the globe, and the only one granted this year in Florida.

“It is a huge honor for FIU to house one of the very few such centers in the U.S.,” said Rebecca Friedman, director of FIU’s European Studies Program, which is part of the Green School. “This appointment allows us to foster connections across borders and reinforce FIU as a facilitator of global research in the social sciences and humanities.”

As a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence, FIU will serve as a clearinghouse for research and teaching on the European Union, will create synergies with existing programs and expertise around FIU and South Florida, will continue to foster and support graduate education with a focus on Europe, and will offer specific expertise on the relations between Europe, Miami and Latin America.

The center is part of the Jean Monnet Actions. The aim of the Actions is to promote excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Union studies worldwide, while also fostering the dialogue between the academic world and policymakers, particularly with the goal of enhancing governance of European Union policies. The program is dedicated to the memory of Jean Monnet, one of the forefathers of the European Union.
